CALL FOR ENTRIES

The VideoFest established ten years ago is relaunching itself in 1997
as transmedia. The festivals original intention was to provide a
creative platform for artists, video groups and media centres beyond
the realm of the Berlin Film Festival. The VideoFest has honoured this
original intention offering unconventional productions public
screenings while gaining a world wide reputation as a meeting place
for the creative talents in media. In may 1997 Mediopolis Berlin e.V.
will once again host a ten day international media festival -
transmedia '97. transmedia '97 will review the state of media art and
innovative applications of new media technologies. The international
exhibition Digital Media World will take place parallel to transmedia
'97 presenting the opportunity to discuss the whole range of
transmedial works and basic tools.

MULTIMEDIA - VIDEO - INNOVATIVE TELEVISION

are the main focal points of transmedia. The interfaces between these
media territories, often viewed as separate, their creative potential
as well as the inherent interaction between Art and commerce will be a
central theme. Videos, computer animations, tv productions, digital
cinema and multimedia projects that have been produced since 1995 can
be submitted.

VIDEO INSTALLATIONS AND PERFORMANCES

transmedia exhibits classic video-sculptures as well as space related
installations, based on interactive or networked systems. Transmedia
invites artists to exhibit but other interested parties may also
submit their proposals. We expressly desire entries for performance
concepts.

CRITERIA

transmedia presents a discussion of electronic and digital media in
the light of contemporary content and creativity There are no thematic
or formal limitations. Works exploring new forms of presentation and
mediation will be given special consideration. The festival does not
however consider itself as a showcase for new technologies. Artistic
and independently produced works are preferred. Strictly commercial
works are not excluded but should be submitted before their public or
commercial release.

FURTHER EVENTS

Artists, companies, producers and educational institutions will be
provided with a platform to present their ideas, concepts and projects
to a broad audience. transmedia questions the philosophical and social
effects connected with technological developments and uses. For the
first time a three day symposium fostering interdisciplinary exchange
will take place. One topic will be neuro aesthetics.

FORMAL REQUIREMENTS

DEADLINE: February 15, 1997

Works must arrive at transmedia before this date. Only VHS
preview-copies will be accepted, for multimedia please check the
instructions on the application form. Costs of dispatch and returning
(only if requested) are to be paid by the entering party. Conditions
are:

Home: enclosure of a correctly stamped not addressed envelope for
returning the work Foreign countries: enclosure of a 10$ note (cash
only)

Selected participants put at the organizers disposition a technically
perfect screening copy. This copy will be returned after the festival
together with the VHS copy. News of whether tapes have been accepted
will be given in April 1997; of rejections in May 1997. Due to the
great amount of entries to be dealt with, we cannot justify
individually the reasons for rejections.

Distributors and universities should contact the festival for special
conditions.

The festival accepts rough cuts, but they should be clearly marked as
such.

AWARDS

transmedia will award three prices for outstanding works in the fields
of video, television and multimedia.

ENCLOSURES

See registration form. All enclosed material will be kept in the
transmedia archives.

LANGUAGE

German or English or subtitles in these languages. Tapes in other
languages must be accompanied by a textlist in German or English. The
screening will then be with voice-over. For multimedia projects only
german or english language works are allowed.

DAMAGES

Tapes received are not covered by insurance. In the eventuality of any
damage to the tape caused by transmedia, only material costs will be
reimbursed.

CUSTOMS

No package from abroad will be accepted whose customs declaration
forms have been filled out wrongly. Packages from outside the European
Union must carry the message "Video cassette. Not for trade -
temporary loan for festival. Value = 0".

ARCHIVE

transmedia copies all selected tapes onto VHS for strictly archive
purposes in order to be able to fulfil the need of distributors and
curators for reviewing tapes which will then be rented from the owner
of rights. There will be no other use of the archive cassettes.

transmedia-TOUR AND DISTRIBUTION

transmedia offers selected tapes the inclusion into its distribution
and the programme of the transmedia -Tour for one year. After one
year, we will draw the balance listing all screenings.

ACCREDITATION

The makers of the works selected will receive an accreditation (a free
festival pass) to transmedia.
